The Thames carried commerce, monarchy, and war for two thousand years before it carried tourists. London's first commuter ferries appeared in 1555; the hop-on, hop-off river service that exists today began as Thames Clippers in 1999, originally a private water-taxi network linking Canary Wharf to the City.
By 2020 the fleet had grown to eighteen high-speed catamarans, each seating 220 passengers, running every twenty minutes between Battersea and Greenwich. The river itself has been engineered since Roman occupation. Embankments built by Joseph Bazalgette between 1865 and 1870 narrowed the Thames by more than ninety metres in central London, accelerating the tidal flow and reclaiming land for Victoria Embankment and the Underground's District Line. The service frequency peaks at six-minute intervals during rush hour, offering an alternative to the Northern Line for eastbound City workers and a moving platform for visitors who want to see the South Bank, the Docklands regeneration zone, and Greenwich's maritime quarter without committing to a single guided route.
